The New World of Work

The nature of organisations, the jobs we do, where and how we work, and the expectations of our workforces are all undergoing change at a rapid rate. Driven by forces from geopolitical, social and demographic, to economic and technological, and reinforced by crises, this new world of work is more varied, more complex, and more unpredictable than the past.

We are in a critical and pivotal time, where many of our old assumptions about work and what is important are being challenged. There are many issues to be addressed, from productivity, fairness and inclusion, stress and wellbeing, to investment in skills and lifelong learning, and even the wider role of responsible business in society.  As has been said, the best way to predict the future is to help shape it. We need to make best use of new tools, particularly artificial intelligence, to shape jobs and work that is not only more productive and effective, but is also good for us and uses our human skills in ways that benefit us all.

Peter Cheese 

Peter is the Chief Executive of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). He is recognised as a consultant, speaker and writer in the field of human capital and organisation, and has worked with many organisations, practitioners and thought leaders in this field.

He also makes regular Radio and TV appearances commenting on trends in the world of work. He was voted as the UKs most influential thinker in HR for 2013 by HR Magazine, and 2008 he was named by Consulting Magazine as one of the top 25 consultants worldwide. He holds 3 honorary doctorates and is a Fellow or Companion of 7 professional bodies.

From a long career in consulting to his current role leading the professional body for HR and people development, Peter has worked with organisations and business leaders, governments, policy makers, and academics giving him a broad perspective on the trends, challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and what should drive our thinking about the changing world of work. Drawing on his book, the New World of Work, his talk will engage and challenge, sharing insights and perspectives on how the future of work is unfolding.
