What's On Hosting Henry VIII Week A Concert for the King: Music from the Court of Henry VIII As part of our Hosting Henry VIII week, we are delighted to host an evening of glorious music that would have been performed for the king himself. Join us for an evening of musical delights with renowned early music specialists Ensemble Pro Victoria. Ensemble Pro Victoria Described as ‘a force for original thinking, daringly and triumphantly realised’ (Choir and Organ), Gramophone-nominated Ensemble Pro Victoria is established as one of the Britain’s finest young early music ensembles (Early Music Review). Founded at the University of Cambridge University in 2015, the ensemble put down roots in the rich tradition of combined research and historical performance, which remains at the heart of their approach. Ensemble Pro Victoria won joint-first prize at the London International Festival of Early Music Young Ensemble Competition (2020), swiftly followed by a Gramophone nomination for their debut recording Robert Fayrfax, Music for Tudor Kings and Queens. EPV’s critically-acclaimed second album Tudor Music Afterlives included many reconstructions by Professor Magnus Williamson, the ensemble’s academic adviser, of some of the first Anglican psalms, fragments of lost works and continental works which circulated England widely either side of the Reformation. Notable previous concerts include Easter from the Spanish Golden Age (Opera North, Howard Assembly Rooms), Music of the English Baroque (London International Early Music Festival), Bach St John Passion (St Mary’s, Bourne St.), and Monteverdi 1610 Vespers (King’s College Chapel, Cambridge). Upoming international tours in 2023 include music by Victoria and Vivanco in their birthplace of Ávila, Spain, and Music from the English Chapel Royal in Cagliari, Sardinia. In 2024, Pro Victoria dive into the world of the royal riding chapel as part of ‘Henry VIII on Tour’; a cross-disciplinary project studying royal progress, headed by Historic Royal Palaces and the Universities of York and Newcastle. 2024 sees a number of new releases on Delphian Records: An Iberian Union (music from the Capela Real of Lisbon – 1623), Henry VIII on Tour, and Advent Calendar (a sequence of readings and music, with former archbishop, Rowan Williams).
