What's On Hosting Henry VIII Week Henry VIII & West Horsley: Progresses to a Forgotten Palace Part of Hosting Henry VIII Week, join us to discover more about our most famous monarch and his connection to West Horsly Place. Henry VIII clearly liked West Horsley as it provided excellent hunting and was not far from his established residences at Woking and Guildford. Indeed, it became one of several manors that were added to the crown portfolio during the last decade of his reign and which he expanded so as to better accommodate his entourage. It is, however, only now that historians are becoming aware of it as one of his progress venues - one which he may have visited with several of his queens. This talk will delve into Henry VIII's interest in West Horsley and set it in the wider context of his royal progresses. Anthony Musson Anthony Musson is Head of Research at Historic Royal Palaces, where he was appointed to lead and foster a distinctive vision for the charity’s research into historic palaces, diverse communities, landscapes and collections. Currently, he is the Project Lead on 'Henry on Tour', leading an AHRC funded project researching the royal progresses of King Henry VIII. He read history and music at King’s College, Cambridge and was previously Professor of Legal History and Director of the Bracton Centre for Legal History Research at the University of Exeter. He has appeared on TV and radio and published extensively on legal, political and visual culture in the medieval and early modern periods. Most recently he edited with JPD Cooper Royal Journeys in Early Modern Europe (Routledge, 2022).
